Biography

Ambassador CHOI Kyonglim was a career diplomat for the Korean Government. He served as Korea’s G20 Sherpa from 2017 to 2021, overseeing Korea’s participation in G20 Summit meetings in Buenos Aires (2018), Osaka (2019), Riyadh (2020, Virtual) and Rome (2021). Ambassador CHOI served as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea in Geneva from 2015 to 2018. In Geneva, Ambassador CHOI served as President of the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2016. He also served as President of the Government Group in the International Labour Organization for 2017-2018 and Chairperson of the Trade in Goods Council in the World Trade Organization for 2017. From 2009 to 2012, he served as Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Brazil. Throughout his career as a diplomat, Ambassador CHOI worked mostly on trade and economic issues. Prior to his appointment to Geneva, he was the Deputy Minister for Trade at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy from 2013 to 2015 and the Deputy Minister for Free Trade Agreement at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 2012 to 2013. He was the lead negotiator for several of Korea’s successful bilateral Free Trade Agreements, including the Korea-India FTA, Korea-Canada FTA and Korea-New Zealand FTA. He also served as the head of delegation for Korea for the preliminary FTA discussions with China and Mexico.
