Biography

Mr. Komizo obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Hosei University and entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1970. At the ministry, domestically, he was employed at the Economic Affairs Division, United Nations Bureau; the Management Section of the Personnel Division; Second Economic Cooperation Division, Economic Cooperation Bureau; the Legal Affairs Division, Treaties Bureau; the International Agreement Division, Treaties Bureau; the Second Southeast Asian Affairs Division, Asian Bureau. Overseas, he served in Japanese Embassies in the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Austria. He was also seconded on two occasions to the International Atomic Energy Agency, first as a legal officer from 1987 to 1991 and later as Special Assistant to Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, Director General of IAEA, from 1997 to 2002, receiving the IAEA Distinguished Service Award upon retirement. After returning to Japan, he served as Director of the International Nuclear Energy Cooperation Division, Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Science Department from 2004 till he was assigned as Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna and then, in 201,0 as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the State of Kuwait. He is now Chairperson of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation and Secretary General of Mayors for Peace.
