Biography

Former Minister SUH Wook was born in the ROK in 1963. Following his graduation from the Korea Military Academy in 1985, he served in various military units front and rear areas. He served as the 48th Chief of Staff of the ROK Army from 2019 to 2020, and subsequently held the position of the 47th Minister of National Defense of the Republic of Korea from 2020 to 2022. During his active duty, General SUH was highly regarded as an expert in combined and joint operations. Not only did he possess extensive field experience—having served as a frontline platoon leader, battalion commander, and as a division and corps commander along major strategic axes but he also served in key positions such as the Director of Operations at the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command, and Director and Chief of the Operations Directorate at the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff. Throughout his tenure as Chief of Staff and Minister, he pushed for military transformation by presenting the goals of "Vision 2050" while simultaneously reinforcing the nation's current defense posture. After stepping down as Minister, he spent three years teaching students, and he is currently serving as a Senior Advisor for defense capability improvement projects at Hanwha Aerospace.
