Biography

Jeong Won-ok (鄭源玉, 47) is a cultural researcher and historian. In 2014, he received his Ph.D. in Cultural Studies from Chung-Ang University with a dissertation titled “Suspicious Deaths Caused by State Violence and the Politics of Mourning.” He currently lectures at Chung-Ang University. His research engages the humanities in the context of addressing cases of state violence—such as suspicious deaths and the April 3 Incident—as well as disaster events, including the Sewol Ferry Disaster. In recent years, he has focused on reconstructing and interpreting women’s experiences of state violence and disasters through key concepts such as affect, representation, placeness, community, and gender. He serves as an executive committee member of Cultural Solidarity, a steering committee member of the Institute for Culture and Society, and an editorial board member of Culture/Science and History and Responsibility.
