Biography

HONG Sung Soo is a Professor of Law at Sookmyung Women’s University and a scholar of socio-legal studies, jurisprudence, and human rights. Since receiving his Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), he has dedicated his career to bridging the gap between legal theory and social reality. His books, such as Misleading Discrimination: What is Discrimination and Anti-discrimination Law (2025) and When Words Hurt: What is Hate Speech (2018), challenge public perceptions of discrimination and hate speech.
Beyond the classroom, Professor HONG plays a role in shaping human rights policy in South Korea. He currently leads several major academic organizations, including the Korean Society of Human Rights Law, the Korean Association for LGBTQIA Studies, and the Korean Association of Gender and Law. His extensive public service includes advisory roles for the Prime Minister’s Gender Equality Committee, the National Assembly Research Service, and the National Human Rights Commission of Korea. He also serves on the boards of various human rights NGOs, reflecting his commitment to the practical application of legal justice and the protection of marginalized groups.
