Biography

From the UK, Mr. Southcott is a Ph.D candidate in the Geography Department, University of Leicester, specializing in Jeju environmental policy. He received an MSc in Education from the University of London South Bank in 2012 and an MA in Human Rights from the University of London in 2011. Mr. Southcott has lived on Jeju for almost 8 years after first moving to the island in 2007. Mr. Southcott gave a TEDx talk last year on preserving Jeju’s heritage as it navigates the challenges of globalisation. Mr. Southcott is a member of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province’s Jeju Peace Cooperation Division, and he advises Global Inner Peace, Jeju’s only international NGO, on community projects including global citizenship initiatives. He has also published research into South Korea’s rehabilitation program for North Korean new settlers. Mr. Southcott writes about local culture and the environment for The Jeju Weekly newspaper, the island’s only English-language newspaper, where he was the editor-in-chief for over 3 years. He is now a visiting professor at Jeju National University of Education,n and between 2011 and 201,2 he was the president of the Jeju chapter of the Korea Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (KOTESOL). In 201,0 he wrote a position paper on education policy for the Prime Minister’s Office of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and in 2012, one of his community education projects withthe Sao Sary Foundation, Cambodia, was funded by the US Embassy in Bangkok.
