Biography

Professor Seong-Phil Hong received his legal education in both South Korea (Seoul National University: LL.B. and MA) and the USA (Yale Law School: LL.M and JSD). He had taught international law, international trade, and investment at Ewha Womans’ UNIVERSITY. And since 2005, he has belonged to the Faculty of Yonsei Law School, teaching on international law, human rights, and international investment law.
He had served as an extern legal advisor to the Governmental Departments in Korea, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Ministry of Unification, the Ministry of Justice, and the National Human Rights Commission. From 2014, he has served as a member and the former Chair-Rapporteur of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. He is the Korean expert in the Asian Council of Jurists of the Asia Pacific Forum and also served as a government-nominated conciliator at the International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).
