Biography
Hee-young Ko is a director at Soom: Be Productions. She has been filming for over 9 years on Udo Island, an island located on the eastern side of Jeju Island, to cover the lives of Jeju women divers. She released a movie in September of 2016 under the title "Breathing Underwater." Another movie of hers was released in November of the same year, which was a documentary called "See-Saw." "Breathing Underwater" was awarded Special Mention and given the CGV Arthouse Distribution Support Prize at Jeonju International Film Festival. She was invited to the London East Asia Film Festival and the London Korean Film Festival in 2016. "Breathing Underwater" was also acquired by the Swedish National Public Broadcaster, Italian Broadcast Television Svizzera Italia, and Hong Kong Encore at MIP DOC in the same year. Director Ko stays active in the Korean film industry in part by working in the role of a Korean pitchingion member at Docs Port Incheon, an Asian Documentary Film Market, in 2016. She will also work as an examiner in the competitive section of the Busan International Short Film Festival in 2017. Along with the films, Director Ko has written books, Documentary China and Breathing Underwater: Life and Breath of Jeju Haenyeo.
