Biography

Yoon, Meehyang is a Representative of The Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance on the Issues of Military Sexual Slavery in Japan. She has been an integral figure in the Weekly Wednesday Demonstrations to resolve the issue of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery in front of the Japanese embassy for more than 27 years. As well as being a human rights activist and an author of 25 years of Wednesday, Ms. Yoon has been a hands-on activist in the Korean Council since the organization was founded in 1990. She contributed to adopt resolution in the US House of Representatives and the European Parliament by closely working with local supporting groups in solidarity with. Aiming to pass the victims’ lives and the history of the movement onto younger generations, she set up the Statue of Peace in front of the Japanese embassy to celebrate the 1,000th anniversary of the Wednesday Demonstration in 2011 and established the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum in 2012. Following the survivors’ honorable decision to help wartime sexual violence victims in the world, she has actively worked for the Butterfly Fund, which supports female victims of sexual violence in armed conflicts.
