With the Tohoku earthquake of March 2011 as a turning point, the risk of earthquakes and tsunamis in the Asia-Pacific area has become a major issue requiring urgent reassessment. First, we need to review the history of earthquakes in the world and discuss their causes. Based on historical records and geophysics, the degree of danger and the distribution of earthquakes in the Asia-Pacific area are analyzed. Finally, in connection with the Tohoku earthquake, the session will discuss the effectiveness of countermeasures to earthquakes and tsunamis.
