8th Jeju Forum
New Waves in Asia
May 29~31, 2013
Haevichi Hotel & Resort Jeju

The forum was first launched in 2001 under the name of ‘Jeju Peace Forum.’ Over these 12 years, Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity has contributed greatly to building an East Asian community. At the 6th forum in 2011, we decided to rename the event ‘Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity,’ and to hold it annually. The 7th forum in 2012 brought together the largest number of international and domestic participants in the history of the event to discuss a wide variety of topics, definitively establishing it as Asia’s preeminent forum. Additionally, the establishment of the Jeju Forum Secretariat in 2012, which made it possible to handle the forum work more systematically, has laid the foundation for transforming the Jeju Forum into a truly global event.
With new leadership not only in South Korea but in major countries around the world, the regional order in Asia is being redrawn. The heightened tensions between South and North Korea and territorial disputes in the region are highlighting the importance of peace and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in the greater Asian region. In addition, Asia is being given an opportunity to play an even more central role on the global stage. In particular, the global economic recession over the past few years requires individuals, companies, and countries—not only in Asia but across the globe—to find a common path and present a new paradigm for mutual prosperity. Now Asia must provide ways to overcome the recession and continue to enjoy the dynamic life of the global community.
Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity 2013 is taking place amid diverse and rapid changes in world affairs. At the forum, experts from diverse areas including not only peace and security, but also the economy, environment, culture, women’s studies, and technology, will address a number of topics as they assess and analyze what changes are taking place—and where those changes will lead—and on the international level. These experts will also be offering their intriguing vision for the future and their proposals for resolving these issues.
As hosts of Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity 2013, we urge all participants of the forum to join us as we embrace all of humanity and unfurl a message of peace and prosperity as powerful as the Pacific Ocean waves rolling endlessly toward the horizon.
