이근 이사장은 2019년 9월 16일부터 제13대 한국국제교류재단 이사장으로 재임 중이다. 그는 서울대학교 외교학과를 졸업하고, 미국 위스콘신 대학에서 정치학 박사를 받았다. 귀국 후 국립외교원 (전 외교안보연구원) 교수로 재직하다 2000년부터 서울대학교 국제대학원 교수로 재직하고 있다. 서울대학교 국제협력본부 본부장, 일본 게이오 대학교 Super Global 초빙교수, 서울대학교 국제학연구소 소장, 미래전략연구원 원장, 다보스 포럼 (World Economic Forum)의 한국위원회 부의장 및 의장, 대통령 직속 미래기획위원회 위원으로 활동한 바 있다. 주요 저서로는 한국외교 2020 어디로 가야 하나? - G2 시대의 공공외교 (2013, 늘늠플러스, 서울대 국제문제연구소 총서), 북방외교, 노태우 시대의 재인식 (2012, 나남), 도발하라 (2016, 이와우) 등이 있으며, 2012년에는 동아일보 선정 10년 뒤 한국을 빛낼 10인으로 선정되기도 하였다.

President Geun Lee was appointed to the current position on September 16, 2019. He is also a professor of International Relations at the Graduate School of International Studies, Seoul National University, and former Dean of Office of International Affairs, Seoul National University. From 2015 to 2016, He was visiting Super Global Professor at Keio University in Japan. He is also former Chair of the Global Agenda Council on the Future of Korea at World Economic Forum (Davos Forum), and currently a member of Global Future Council of World Economic Forum. Before joining the faculty of Seoul National University, he served as a professor at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS, Currently, Korean National Diplomatic Academy), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea. He also served as President of an independent think tank, Korea Institute for Future Strategies from 2003-2007. His publications include “Clash of Soft Power between China and Japan”, “A Theory of Soft Power and Korea’s Soft Power Strategy”, “The Nexus between Korea’s Regional Security Options and Domestic Politics”, “US Global Defense Posture Review and its Implications on the US-Korea Relations” and co-authored The Environmental Dimension of Asian Security. He received his B.A. in political science from Seoul National University, and M.A. and Ph.D in political science from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, U.S.A.
