케빈 러드 전 호주 총리는 2021년 1월, 아시아소사이어티 회장 및 CEO로 임명되었으며, 2015년 1월 이래 아시아소사이어티 정책연구원장을 역임하였다. 2007년부터 2010년 까지는 호주 총리를, 2010년부터 2012년 까지는 외교부 장관을 지냈으며, 2013년부터 다시 호주 총리로 직무를 수행한 바 있다. 총리직 수행 당시, 글로벌 금융 위기상황에서 호주의 대응을 이끌었고, 호주는 경기침체를 겪지 않은 유일한 주요 선진국으로 떠올랐다. 러드 전 총리는 2009년 위기에 대한 글로벌 대응을 이끌 G20의 창립자 중 한 명으로 널리 알려져 있다. 또한, 총리 및 외교부 장관으로서 글로벌 및 외교정책 리더십 분야를 적극적으로 이끌어왔다. 특히, 동아시아정상회담 (EAS)를 더욱 확장시켜 2010년에는 미국과 러시아를 포용하는데 큰 원동력을 발휘한 바 있다. 아시아의 뿌리 깊은 긴장을 관리하는데 도움을 줄 수 있도록, 아시아 내 공동 안보 제도 및 문화를 점진적으로 구축하여 EAS를 더욱 확대된 아태지역 커뮤니티로 발전시키자는 개념을 최초로 제시하기도 하였다. 기후변화 문제와 관련하여 2007년 교토 프로토콜을 비준하였으며, 그 다음해인 2008년에는 호주의 신재생에너지 목표를 의무적으로 20%로 하는 제도를 법제화했다. 이와 더불어, 남극해에서 일본의 포경을 막기 위해 국제사법재판소에 호주의 의의를 제기하기도 했다. UN안전보장이사회 비상임이사국 지위를 얻기 위한 노력을 성공적으로 이끌었으며, 호주 해외 원조 예산을 두배 가까이 증가시키는 계획을 관장했다. 국제평화연구소 이사회 의장 및 IMF 이사 외부 자문위원으로 활동하고 있다.

Kevin Rudd became president and CEO of Asia Society in January 2021 and has been president of the Asia Society Policy Institute since January 2015. He served as Australia’s Prime Minister from 2007 to 2010, then as Foreign Minister from 2010 to 2012, before returning as Prime Minister in 2013. As Prime Minister, Rudd led Australia’s response during the Global Financial Crisis. Australia was the only major advanced economy not to go into recession. Rudd is also internationally recognized as one of the founders of the G20, which drove the global response to the crisis and in 2009. As Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Rudd was active in global and regional foreign policy leadership. He was a driving force in expanding the East Asia Summit (EAS) to include both the U.S. and Russia in 2010. He initiated the concept of transforming the EAS into a wider Asia-Pacific community to help manage deep-rooted tensions in Asia by building over time the institutions and culture of common security in Asia. On climate change, Rudd ratified the Kyoto Protocol in 2007 and legislated in 2008 for a mandatory 20 percent renewable energy target for Australia. Rudd launched Australia’s challenge in the International Court of Justice with the objective of stopping Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean. Rudd drove Australia’s successful bid for its current non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and oversaw the near-doubling of Australia’s foreign aid budget. Rudd is Chair of the Board of the International Peace Institute. He is a member of the IMF Managing Director’s External Advisory Group.
