Mr. Bong-hyun Kim passed High Diplomatic Service Examination in 1982 and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of the Republic of Korea. He served in various countries including Japan, the Russian Federation and Pakistan. He also worked at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations in New York, U.S.A. (1996-2000 and 2001-2002).
In 2000, he served as a Director, United Nations Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MOFAT). During his directorship, Mr. Han Seung-soo, then-Minister of MOFAT was elected as President of the General Assembly of the United Nations. Thereafter, Mr. Bong-hyun Kim served in the office of the President of the UNGA as an advisor from 2001 to 2002.
His career includes Advisor to Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, then-Minister of MOFAT from 2004 until 2005, Senior Director for Innovation and Personnel Management, MOFAT from 2005 until 2006 and Director-General, Overseas Koreans and Consular Affairs Bureau from 2006 until 2008. He received an Order of Service Merit of the President in 2007 in honor of his dedication to his work and achievements during his tenure of the Director-General.
He served as Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Korean Permanent Mission to the United Nations from 2008 to 2011, and thereafter became Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs, MOFAT in 2011. It is also notable that Mr. Bong-hyun Kim, Deputy Minister contributed to the successful election of the Republic of Korea to a member of the UN Security Council.
He also served as a Sherpa for the Nuclear Security Summit held in Seoul in 2012 in his capacity as Deputy Minister. He led the Summit to a dazzling success. He was appointed in 2013 as Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Australia and served until May 2016.
He obtained his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Dongguk University, the Republic of Korea, in 2009.

He is married and has two daughters.
